Seasonal tree care in Northern California

Winter & early spring (dormant season)
The best window for most structural pruning. Without leaves, we can see the branch structure clearly, and cuts heal quickly once spring growth begins. Fruit trees and ornamentals especially benefit from dormant-season trimming.
Spring & summer
Light trimming is fine year-round for deadwood and safety hazards. For valley oaks, we avoid fresh pruning during peak spring growth when fresh cuts can attract pests and disease-carrying beetles.
Fall
A good time to remove storm-damaged limbs and clean up the canopy before Sacramento's winter winds and rain arrive. Heavy pruning is usually saved for the dormant season ahead.
